Physical Model - Timber Plaster and Card
This Retrofit project focuses on microcosms of the house. Looking mostly at entrances and the difficulties met by older people when it comes to entering and exiting their homes.
There is an emphasis on the importance of feeling safe in the home of an older person through objects and materiality. In-built timber furniture provides stability and comfort.
I wanted to show the need for older people’s houses to be accessible and suitable all the while being stylish and removing the ‘ill’ stigma from an accessible home. Everyone should have a home they are proud of and feel safe living in.
A bench with a table allows for taking off wet / dirty shoes and jackets and a place to store them while they dry. A roof-light above provides ventilation and lighting for this space.
The wardrobe in the reception, is designed to allow for shoe storage at comfortable heights while bench has 2 arm supports and is at a height that eases putting shoes on and standing.
